<p>Parents know a nightly bedtime is not always easy to enforce. But researchers say bedtime rules may improve a child&#8217;s development. A new study found better results in four-year-olds who go to bed around the same time every night and sleep at least eleven hours. Getting less than that was linked to lower abilities in language, reading and early math skills. Researchers at SRI International in California did the study. It involved about eight thousand preschool children whose parents took part in government research on early childhood.       The parents answered questions by telephone at nine months and again at four years. The amount of sleep was based on their reporting of a child&#8217;s usual bedtime and wake time. These were not independently confirmed. SRI policy researcher Erika Gaylor says doctors can easily try to get parents to set regular bedtimes. And at bedtime she urges parents to follow routines like reading books or telling stories to their children.For most measures of development, the study found that an earlier bedtime was also a predictor of higher scores. Last August, a study in the journal Sleep Medicine said children who go to bed after nine o&#8217;clock took longer to fall asleep and slept less. The study found that children also got less sleep if they did not have bedtime routines. The new findings were presented in June in San Antonio, Texas, at a meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. A separate study found that more sleep may even make a person run faster. The study was small &#8212; seven players on the Stanford University football team. For the study, they aimed for at least ten hours of sleep each night during the season. After seven to eight weeks of more sleep, the players ran faster in short training races. They also felt less sleepy during the day. Stanford sleep researcher Cheri Mah says sleep should be part of an athlete&#8217;s training program. This is some of her advice: Before competition, extend your nightly sleep for several weeks to reduce a sleep debt. Adults should try to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Teenagers and young adults should aim for nine hours or more. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day. <p>This video is a part of a series on the seminal work by Evelyn Underhill, Mysticism:  The Study in  Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness, 1911.</p>
<p>The Dark Night of the Soul  </p>
<p>Underhill&#8217;s greatest book, Mysticism: A Study of the Nature and Development of Man&#8217;s Spiritual<br />
Consciousness, was published in 1911, and is distinguished by the very qualities which make it<br />
inappropriate as a straightforward textbook. The spirit of the book is romantic, engaged, and<br />
theoretical rather than historical or scientific. Underhill has little use for theoretical explanations and<br />
the traditional religious experience, formal classifications or analysis. She dismisses William James&#8217;<br />
pioneering study, The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), and his &#8220;four marks of the mystic<br />
state&#8221; (ineffability, noetic quality, transcience, and passivity). James had admitted that his own<br />
constitution shut him off almost entirely from the enjoyment of mystical states thus his treatment was<br />
purely objective. Underhill substituted (1) mysticism is practical, not theoretical, (2) mysticism is an<br />
entirely spiritual activity, (3) The business and method of mysticism is love. (4) mysticism entails a<br />
definite psychological experience.<br />

<p>I think with this Underhill is speaking of those mystics for whom real effort is expended, an active mysticism as opposed to a passive state.  The dark night then is characterized by continued effort but with little result, and although she doesn&#8217;t clarify it clearly in this portion of the reading (only 9 mins of a 45 min discussion) it is ego involvement which causes clouded perception, pain, intense loneliness, and suffering.  Being unable to experience the true joy of the illuminated state until a sort of critical mass of ego involvement implodes on itself freeing the higher consciousness.  While Underhill seems to describe the Christian mystic, the occurence of the dark night is described in many different spiritual traditions. For example, this might be compared with anatta of Buddhist doctrine.</p>

<p>We American Citizens are free men &amp; women. Our inalienable rights are endowed upon us by our creator. They﻿ were given to us by God himself. They were NOT graciously afforded us by any man. Therefore, they can be taken by NO man. We hold these truths to be self evident that ALL men are created equal. If the elitist don&#8217;t agree, then I have a rifle that says its so. Long live the Republic</p>
<p>A young girl from Russia (Slovenia) recently moved me to emotion with a simple comment.  She stated that the fate of the entire world, lies now in the hands of the real American People.
