Parents know a nightly bedtime is not always easy to enforce. But researchers say bedtime rules may improve a child’s development. A new study found better results in four-year-olds who go to bed around the same time every night and sleep at least eleven hours. Getting less than that was linked to lower abilities in language, reading and early math skills. Researchers at SRI International in California did the study. It involved about eight thousand preschool children whose parents took part in government research on early childhood. The parents answered questions by telephone at nine months and again at four years. The amount of sleep was based on their reporting of a child’s usual bedtime and wake time. These were not independently confirmed. SRI policy researcher Erika Gaylor says doctors can easily try to get parents to set regular bedtimes. And at bedtime she urges parents to follow routines like reading books or telling stories to their children.For most measures of development, the study found that an earlier bedtime was also a predictor of higher scores. Last August, a study in the journal Sleep Medicine said children who go to bed after nine o’clock took longer to fall asleep and slept less. The study found that children also got less sleep if they did not have bedtime routines. The new findings were presented in June in San Antonio, Texas, at a meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. A separate study found that more sleep may even make a person run faster. The study was small — seven players on the Stanford University football team. For the study, they aimed for at least ten hours of sleep each night during the season. After seven to eight weeks of more sleep, the players ran faster in short training races. They also felt less sleepy during the day. Stanford sleep researcher Cheri Mah says sleep should be part of an athlete’s training program. This is some of her advice: Before competition, extend your nightly sleep for several weeks to reduce a sleep debt. Adults should try to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Teenagers and young adults should aim for nine hours or more. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day. The Empire was officially known as the C-class and each aircraft was christened with a name beginning with C. The first aircraft, G-ADHL Canopus, was completed in June 1936 and launched on 3 July. A total of 42 Empires were built, all at Short’s Rochester factory.

Imperial Airways (and its successor BOAC), Qantas and TEAL operated the Short Empire.

The first series of the Short Empires, the S23, could carry 5 crew, 17 passengers, and 4,480 lb (2,035 kg) of cargo at a maximum speed of 174 knots (320 km/h).

The range of the S.23 was less than that of the US Sikorsky “Clipper” flying boats and as such they could not provide a trans-Atlantic service. Two boats (Caledonia and Cambria) were lightened and given long range tanks so they could make the trip but that meant they could carry fewer passengers and less cargo. In an attempt to manage the Altantic crossing a piggy-back approach was tried. Using a built up S.23 design as the main carrier and a smaller four-engined floatplane design, the Short S.20, mounted on its back. Only a single example was built of a carrier aircraft, the S.21 (Maia) and one S.20 (Mercury) together known as the Short Mayo Composite A successful mid-air launch of Mercury was made in 1938.

The S30 series were fitted with Bristol Perseus sleeve valve engines and had a strengthened airframe allowing the take off weight to be increased to 46,000 pounds and giving a range of 1,500 miles. Cabot, Caribou, Clyde and Connemara were fitted with in-flight refuelling equipment and extra fuel tanks so they could be used for a trans-atlantic airmail service. The idea behind this was for the aircraft to take off and once airborne take on extra fuel to an all up weight of 53,000 pounds giving a range of over 2,500 miles. The extra fuel did reduce the payload to 4,270 pounds against the 6,250 pounds of the standard craft. The refuelling was by 3 converted Handley Page Harrow bombers operating out of Ireland and Newfoundland.

In addition to the C class flying boats there were also three S.26 type built; these were known as the “G class” and had names starting with “G”: Golden Hind, Golden Fleece and Golden Horn. They were a scaled up version of the C class, with a wing span of 134 ft (40.9 m) and a length of 101 ft. (30.9 m).

A Hollywood movie about the life of computer pioneer Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992) would go like this: a young professor abandons the ivy-covered walls of academia to serve her country in the Navy after Pearl Harbor and finds herself on the front lines of the computer revolution. She works hard to succeed in the all-male computer industry, is almost brought down by personal problems but survives them, and ends her career as a celebrated elder stateswoman of computing, a heroine to thousands, hailed as the inventor of computer programming. Throughout Hoppers later years, the popular media told this simplified version of her life story. 


In his book, Grace Hopper and the Invention of the Information Age, author Kurt Beyer goes beyond the screen play-ready myth to reveal a more authentic Hopper, a vibrant and complex woman whose career paralleled the meteoric trajectory of the postwar computer industry, and discusses the indelible contribution she made to the nascent computer industry.

Hopper made herself one of the boys in Howard Aikens wartime Computation Laboratory at Harvard and then moved on to the Eckert and Mauchly Computer Corporation. She was influential in male-dominated military and business organizations at a time when women were encouraged to devote themselves to housework and childbearing. Hoppers greatest technical achievement was to create the tools that would allow humans to communicate with computers in terms other than ones and zeroes. This advance influenced all future programming and software design and laid the foundation for the development of user-friendly personal computers.

The Computer History Museum is proud to showcase the career and accomplishments of a genuine innovator, Grace Hopper. Among her many awards, Grace Hopper was the Computer History Museums first Fellow Award recipient for her development of programming languages, computer instruction, and her lifelong naval service. The complete list of her awards and degrees exceeds two full pages, including the National Medal of Technology and 37 honorary doctoral degrees.

She is most definitely a role model but not just for women. Author Kurt Beyer, who met Hopper while he was a student at the U.S. Naval Academy, says she influenced his own career choices first as a naval officer, then as an academic, and finally as an entrepreneur.
