AC360: Biased towards lighter skin (pt. 1)

Kids are asked, “why do you want that skin color?” Renowned child psychologist and University of Chicago professor Margaret Beale Spencer, a leading researcher in the field of child development, led the study. She designed the pilot study and led a team of three psychologists: two testers to execute the study and a statistician to help analyze the results.

Her team tested 133 children from schools that met very specific economic and demographic requirements. In total, eight schools participated: four in the greater New York City area and four in Georgia.

    @cannister He is …
    @cannister He is expecting it, clearly the children were interviewed before, for instance he says “do you remember what you said?” The original testers weren’t all white, you can look it up – the info is described in the video’s comment. And he didn’t come up with the word “nasty” he repeated what the girl had just said. This isn’t the actual study, this is just a representation of it for tv, if you want to find tester’s bias look at the original study.

    So, to the people …
    So, to the people who keep saying that “this is horrifying”, “heartbreaking”, “sad”–

    HAVE A LITTLE MORE FAITH IN YOUR OWN SOCIETY, WON’T YOU.

    If you really want to make a change, go out today and hug someone who has a totally different skin color from you.

    This is not to say, however, that I am any advocate of racial-splitting, white-supremacy and whatever. Just the opposite. I am often regarded in stereotype because of my skin color, as well. But I thought I’d point it out to you: even though it may very well be “scary/shocking”, experiments have their flaws, too.

    I’d like to have optimism in the young people of our society. I honestly think they know better than that. Our children are smarter than this.

  5. cannister says:

    I see an …
    I see an unintentional tester’s bias. He’s prompting the children. You can tell.

    “So you think it looks ‘nasty’?” <–bit of a harsh word to use. And pulling the card for an easier access towards the black kid/white kid towards the child’s pointing finger? He’s expecting a specific response.

    Not to mention, the experiment conductor is also white; being both an adult as well as an authority figure. It is very possible that the children were trying to “please” him by favoring the white kid.
