if there are other caregivers or teachers in the child’s life, what is their role in influencing the child’s social-emotional development?
Parents are usually the first people a child bonds to and thus becoming their first teacher. Babies learn to trust their parents because it is their parents that take care of them when they are infants when they feed, clean, and hold them. Babies recognize their parents voices when they are born, many times you can see a newborn’s reaction to mom or dad’s voice. It is the parent that begins the process of the social-emotional development.
Caregivers and teachers should be the ones that help the parents with this development later on. The basics should come from the parents and any "tweaking" can be done by a teacher or caregiver. Many times parents believe that it is someone else’s job to teacher their child but they must understand that they are their child’s only life long teacher.

Mom of 2 girls and Teacher
As a teacher, I see far too many parents hovering around, and actually hamper the child’s development. At my school, they did away with student council because this involved voting, which resulted in winners and losers. (Heaven forbid!) I am all for students/children experiencing success, but it is equally important for them to experience failure. I’ve actually labelled such parents "Helparents" on my blog, which can stand for either helicopter parents or parents from hell…your choice.
