Estimated levels of protection for the Leopard 2 range from 920 – 940 RHAe on the turret, 620 RHAe on the glacis and lower front hull on the Leopard 2A6 against kinetic projectiles.

Canadian Leoaprd 2A6M hit by IED:
On 02 August 2007, a Canadian Leopard 2A 6M has been involved in a serious IED incident. The crew stumbled upon an (improvised explosive device) and made history as the first to test the (Leopard 2A6)M-packet. It worked as it should, the crew survived without serious injuries. The Canadian officer in Afghanistan sent a personal thank you to the German government after he and his crew survived the powerful Taliban roadside bomb blast.

I made my own documentary video about the Leopard 1 & 2 main battle tanks which is at the same time a tribute video for this legendary tank. Like the leopard 1 was once seen as the best tank in the world, so does the Leopard 2 today. Many important information is included to show why many professional WW2 experts agree with the fact that the Leoaprd 2 is the most advanced MBT available.
Also I have added some additinal subtitles about furtehr informational purpose that I found on many sources.
The first prototypes of the new Leopard-Generation began in the early 60′s with the MBT-70 (a project between Germany and the USA) however this project was later canceled and the MBT-70 funding was redirected to create the more successful M1 Abrams for the U.S. Army and Leopard 2 for the Bundeswehr.
At the time the leopard 1A1 tank entered the Germany army, it was the World’s first “High-Tech” main battle tank, equipped with the newest computerized fire control and auto-aim system, as well as the new EMES 12A1 sighting system, leftover image-intensifier night sights, Collective protection with the now-famous added “skirts” along the sides to protect the upper tracks and many more modern devicis. At the time the Leopard 1 was developed it used the msot powerful tank gun in the world.
At the Military demonstration on June, 1965 , the Leopard 1 was notable superior and outstanding compared to all other tanks at the time.

@mattmatt115 and actually the US was considering making the Leo II its main battle tank in early 80′s, But in test trials in aberdeen maryland between the M-1 and Leo II the americans discovered the Germans had hollowed out all the armor in Leo II to make it very light and more manueverable, USA Immediately cancelled further testing and consideration, If Leo so great why CHEAT.

@FxGunMetal the Leo II and the Abrams are both descendants of the MBT-70, thats why we have one in Ft Knox, and the Germans have one in Munster, also why Leo and Abrams share many of the same systems, I do not think Leo I had all those features in the 60′s. Hard to call any tank best in world or best in history without major combat role or numerous other factors.

@Lvieru96 That’s because of the relations between Soviet and the West. At the time the Leoaprd 2A4 was developed during the cold war conflict, it was expected to fight against Russian tanks as WW3 could begin any time.
After the NATO was founded, Germany became allies with the USA. The only possible enemy of the NATO at this time was the Soviet Union in mid-70s and 80s. The leoaprd 2 was chosen to be the MBT of most NATO countries that’s why only Russian tanks were compared with the Leoaprd 2.

It showed the effective performance of the L/44 gun which was among the most powerful tank gun of its time and could destroy any russian-built tank like the T-55, T-62 and T-72 which had only 203mm RHA armor. That’s why many tanks in the world (including M1 Abrams) adopted the L/44 & L/55 Rheinmetall gun which is today the most popular tank gun in the world!

Norway is still using the Leo 1 with the brigdelayer pioner tank, recovery tank ant the Leo1a5.. Leo1A5 NO was the first leo tank that used a electric stabilized gun use on the target.. LIsten.. The MBT 70 was a project before Leopard 2 and Leopard 2 was a result after the project was shutt down.. Leopard 1 is not the MBT 70 project.. They started Leo1 in the 60s… And the late versons of Panther tank of ww2 had in fact infrared optics for the gunner.. But very few had that… But the Leo1 was the first and best tank just after ww2 and too the Leo2 took over.. Still the german tanks is the best and also all the different roles they use,,,
