How could educators counteract some of the negative effects of computer use?
First, the easiest and the shortest : act as you will negate for bad effects from other sources i.e motivate but don’t coax. Then control his time with the computer; sort out the priorities loud and clear — he must also study, play out side and make friends in the neighbourhood. Visit regularly the "history" in the browser and know what are the sites he visits (of course if he has not already known how to remove that) and bar these to be logged (Zone Alarm can help you). Sit with him and browse the interesting sites he will like and get him interested for the good sites. Tell his parents that as he grows his curiosity will grow and will try to discover the unknowns.There is no harm in visiting websites but parents must keep an eye on where he swims as some sites have undercurrents and he may be swept away from his goals.

I have noticed a decline in motor skills. Not hand eye co ordination which you would expect to improve with mouse over and click & drag games, but muscle strentgh in fingers needed for good pencil grip to facilitate writing & drawing. I have come to associate this with using a computer but may be wrong. I would recommend a program of muscle strenthening excercises for every child starting kindergarten & older.
