OLPC Mission, Part 2: The XO Laptop, design for learning

Why give a Laptop? See http://laptop.org and http://laptop.org/givemany

Substitute the word Laptop, with the word Education, and you have much of the answer. XOs make it possible to collaborate, learn, teach, and publish at no cost. They inspire new forms of learning, and attention to education. And the provide access to digital texts in places too remote to send and update physical books in a cost-effective way.

    @Mentocthemindtaker …
    @Mentocthemindtaker Books exist as objects, rather than pieces of technology data relayers that become “outdated” nor do they rely on things generated by societies that do rely on electricity etc… Books with philosophy, geography, science reference books, that stuff is never outdated. It stays the same. There are books on building structures, planting crops, sewing, forging metal, food safety, lagoons (for water treatment), animal husbandry, etc.. Books are amazing.

    @shanna9650 It’s …
    @shanna9650 It’s interesting you should say that. Take a look at some of the other videos on YouTube. They will explain to you that the whole idea of the XO is connectivity and communication with others. XO’s together create a ‘mesh’ network, where you can see what applications others are using and can join in. The amount of multi-user applications is huge.

    @srobulack Wow, …
    @srobulack Wow, just wow. Harsh criticism for an organisation that is truly doing something that they believe will bring about a big, lasting change to the world and in particular children from impoverished backgrounds.

    So, to level such criticism, you must be in a position to do so. Please tell everyone on YouTube what it is that YOU do to help people in other parts of the world to learn, develop and grow?

    Or do you in fact simply post ignorant opinions in the comments section on YouTube?

    @srobulack
    “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” So take it from there, children are the future they need to educate themselves to create a sustainable way of living!

    @srobulack You …
    @srobulack You said it yourself, because the kids need education OLPC was founded! There is a significant amount of NGOs helping to feed the poor, but since education since to the be last thing in the list of priorities there are Nonprofits such as OLPC to help people educate themselves… what would it matter to have food and the rest of important stuff if you are not educated? Might as well die!

    Governor …
    Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing an initiative to introduce digital textbooks into schools. It will move Californias education system into the 21st century. But there is no mention in the CDTI about providing devices for reading the texts. Does it mean that students will need to have their own computers? Not every student has. Is the XO laptop cheap enough to give all students? What about a cooperation between OLPC and CDTI. Internet is a great treasure chest for learning!

    I help out at the YMCA as a volunteer and swim instructor. Likewise, with the Humane Society, though I don’t teach the dogs to doggy-paddle. I bought 4 of these – 2 for “overseas” and 2 for here… then gave my 2nd unit to some kids in Brazil.

    We HELP people because we can HELP people – no more explanation is needed.

    It was a joke. and not all hackers are bad. Hacking applies to more than just hacking a bank account or some crap like that. So loosen up and take a joke. I think its great to help the kids, I just think eating is more important than learning, so i think if they want to give a hundred buck, it should be to the poor kids who are starving.

  24. chinaliew says:

    yes, next time they will hack you using that pc,

    and when all the pc connect together,your pc will suffer because your pc cant deal with multiple attack

    This seem like a good idea, but i bet they rather play games on it instead of learn.
