What are good sources for child development in divorced families?

I live in a different state than my daughter. I want to have her for the summer but I am not sure this is the best for her development, being away from her home with her mother. I am doing research and I would love some direction and sources.

By Fred Rogers.

Mr. Fred Rogers served as producer and host of the children’s TV program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood for more than 30 years. While the last new episode was aired in 2001, the series continues to be broadcast to the latest generation of eager young viewers. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Fred Rogers has written widely about children and remains active in a variety of projects as head of Family Communications, Inc., in Pittsburgh.

Right beside my chair at Family Communications, Inc. is a piece of calligraphy which a good friend gave to me years ago. It’s a quotation from The Little Prince by Antoine de St. Exupery: "L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." ("What is essential is invisible to the eyes.") Those may seem like unexpected words to highlight in The World Almanac, where trends and changes are made very visible; nevertheless, I find those words, and what they stand for, to be more valuable every day. I thought of them especially in the wake of the "attacks" of Sept. 11, 2001.

Looking Behind the Figures

It takes time to go beyond what our eyes are seeing and to begin to listen with our hearts; nevertheless, that’s the only way that we’ll come to know truly what’s happening in our society–by looking and listening behind and beyond the statistics, attempting to understand what helps families cope with the world of today.

Our Neighborhood television program has been broadcast on national public television for 33 seasons. People often ask what we’ve changed in our broadcasts over the years. Our answer: "Not much at all." To be sure, the outsides of many children’s lives have changed–the figures in this almanac attest to that–divorce, number of children living with grandparents or in foster care, homelessness. But the insides of children’s lives have not changed much at all! We human beings evolve very slowly, and, of course, that which remains the same is that which is truly essential (and invisible)!! Deep inside us, we want…and need…to know that we are loved and lovable, that we are capable of giving and receiving love.

It is only through our relationships that we come to know that we are loved. Children inevitably become aware of events in the outside world that may be upsetting, even frightening. Every child needs a place–a home, a room, a lap–where, in the company of a caring adult, he or she can feel safe. In this sanctuary, a child’s sense of being a valuable person, and the feeling that life is worth the effort to live, can begin to take shape. Hope and trust that the world is, on the whole, a good place starts here. That’s the foundation for all learning and healthy growing.

Dealing with Feelings

In the safe harbor of a caring relationship with an adult, children learn healthy ways to deal with their feelings about the outside changes in their lives. Saying goodbye to a parent at the beginning of a workday, dealing with divorce or domestic violence, or moving to another city–all that evokes strong feelings, and those feelings can be overwhelming and frightening. In Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, we have a saying: "Feelings are mentionable, and whatever is mentionable can be more manageable." What a gift we all give to children when we encourage them to talk about what makes them happy, jealous, angry, shy, afraid, or proud.

There’s a Neighborhood song that we sing many times on our programs. It too seems to be more important than ever in today’s world: "What do you do with the mad that you feel?" If we understand that anger is a reaction to feeling powerless or helpless we can better understand children’s anger and help them know that it’s okay to be angry, but we must help them also know that it’s not okay to hurt anyone. We need to encourage them to find constructive ways of dealing with their so-called negative feelings…ways like pounding clay, playing instruments, running fast, stomping, building with blocks, drawing angry pictures. We also need to make limits and rules in order to help children develop self-control so they can stop themselves when they’re about to do something that may hurt themselves or others. What a perfect time to say, "I’m proud of you"–when a child is about to hit someone but hesitates, finds control, and holds back.

Of course, most very young children don’t yet have the ability to talk at length about what they’re feeling. It’s mostly through their play that they are able to deal with the stresses in their lives. Children need open-ended playthings, so they can make their fantasy world be what they need. They need to be able to control what happens to their toys, cars, or stuffed animals, even though they aren’t able to control many of the other things in their lives. Obviously, they can’t "control" their parents’ divorce or a move to another home or a new baby’s arrival into the family. Children need to have a chance to re-work their feelings about what has happened in their lives, and they do this thro

What type of jobs can you get in child development or learning about children with mental issues?

I would like to learn more about the development of the human brain and I"m not sure what type of career path to take. I thought about psychology but thats too much schooling. I am 22, full time job and I own a home, so a part time job is out of the question. I’ve been looking into the local community colleges. Any ideas on what type of career you can learning about the development of humans/children and/or mentally retarded people?

I’m afraid the main choice is psychology. Then you can specify child psychology or become an educational psychologist. You can get carework with children, or work in Special Needs in schools, but neither is well paid and as I said the main qualification that improves your prospects would be psychology. It may be "too much schooling" but it’s an important and challenging career.

Do you think co-sleeping with a toddler delays their development?

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under and development | 15 Comments »

Do you think that a toddler should be sleeping in their own room, with the door shut and the lights off at night?

Does co-sleeping delay a toddler’s development?
This question is based on some advice a friend of mine got from a medical professional.
*** PLEASE Keep in mind that I did not ask your opinion of co-sleeping! Please only answer the question that was asked. Thank you! ***

Only if the toddler is suffering from sleep deprivation by co-sleeping. This is rarely the case, so no. Parents who co-sleep are often also interested in other aspects of their child’s physical, emotional and mental development so there is likely to be a correlation between co-sleeping and children who are above average, but one does not directly affect the other, which is clear as other non-co-sleepers are just as likely to be nterested in their child’s development and are just as likely to have above average children.

How can I market my software development business?

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010 and filed under and development | 3 Comments »

I have recently started a small software development company. How do I go about getting more projects? All ideas and answers are most welcome!

Thanks in advance.
Thanks. Just to clarify, we dont develop products but offer software development services for other companies, mostly small businesses. Any ideas on how we can market our services to target customers will be most helpful. Who should we contact? Who can we partner with? How can we get help on the sales front (on a commission basis). Are there existing forums or avenues for these? In short how can we get more clients and projects?

Check whats in development in sourceforge. The most active stuff is obviously the most active industries. Search google and yahoo ads to see what businesses are offering when you place "software development" and similar as keywords.

edit:

Most businesses don’t know they could be running more efficiently. For example, if you have a database program you could offer free evaluations to small shops and kiosks to tell them how much more efficient they could manage with your help. I’d recommend sending free evaluations to online groups or nearby salesmen about what your services can provide.

I just cant see businesses going out and saying, "make me a system that will make me more productive". It’s possible, but rare.

Educational groups like tutoring servies for standardized tests, and kids, are especially likely to benefit from software technologies.

How does mining and urban development effect water quality?

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010 and filed under and development | 1 Comment »

For each mining and urban development:

1) what are the contaminants
2) what are the outcome of these contaminants
3) Are they linear/point/area source?

Your question is too broad to get an answer… WHAT KIND OF MINING… various types of mines produce different types of pollution. WHAT KIND OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT?… that can be anything.

You need to narrow down your question a bit if you want any real answers.

- Constitutional And Social Development Between 1860 And 1877 That Amounted To A Revolution

In what ways and to what extent did constitutional and social development between 1860 and 1877 amount to a revolution? There are many ways that constitutional and social developments caused a revolution. There are a few important developments that will be mentioned. The first one is the secession of 1860, which was a constitutional development. Some other constitutional developments that caused conflict were the Emancipation Proclamation, three civil rights bills, and the reconstruction. Some social developments that caused conflict were the Freedmen’s Bureau, the Black Codes, and the Ku Klux Klan. One of the social developments was the Freedmen’s Bureau. The Freedmen’s Bureau was supposed to give Homesteads to the freed slaves but none of the promises by the government were kept, as stated in Document E. The freedmen were getting very angry. In document I the picture shows that this is worse than slavery because of the Ku Klux Klan and the White League made it hard for them and the freedmen had no rights. One of the constitutional developments that caused a revolution had to do with the South Carolina Declaration of Causes of Secession, which is stated in Document A. South Carolina was the first to secede and then others followed and this angered the U.S. because they still considered that to be their land. In Document B Senator John Sherman stated that the policy of this country should be to make everything national. He thinks that if we were dependent on the United States we shall have a more generous nationality. Sherman stated, “It has been that principle of state rights, that bad sentiment that has elevated state authority above national authority, that has been the main instrument by which our government is sought to be overthrown.” This means that because we gave the states too much power and rights in government that this is the reason of our government being overthrown. Another development that caused a revolution was the Reconstruction Act. This act put too many restrictions on the south. One way was that it established military governors police power and expected to register new electorate voters, just to name a few. This made the south angrier and a revolution was insight. Looking at Document F you can see that Senator Lot Morrill thinks that the Civil Rights Act of 1866 is revolutionary. But he was mad because there was already a revolution taking place and nobody knew or cared. The speech brought up many questions about what had to be fixed and what kind of revolution would occur. These are the many developments that brought on a revolution that helped or hurt the country. This is one of the revolutions that helped shape this country.
