BedZED – Beddington Zero (fossil) Energy Development

Take a tour of the UK’s first mainstream eco-village. Located in south London, BedZED is a sustainable live/work community with solutions for food, travel and waste. Environmental organisation, BioRegional, who are partners in the project, lead the tour.

    What do the folks …
What do the folks living in BedZed think of the proposed incinerator for Beddington Lane?? it kind of defeats the object of your holistic living when you’ll be breathing in dioxins that are cancer causing…maybe you need to join the fight with the rest of the Beddington residents to stop the over saturation of Beddington Lane.

Nice video and a really inspiring project. I hope to visit in 5 weeks time…I’d like to get some idea on what might be practical in retrofitting in existing buildings and making them one-planet livable.

    I’d like to know …
I’d like to know who did the biodiversity study. An independant body ? I think not. Yellow Wagtails Tree Sparrows and Skylarks bred there. Species which are in decline in Britain. Many more common species bred there and four species of Owl used this area to hunt. Migrants such as Wheatears and Ring Ouzels passed through, you won’t see them on your “green roofs”. Trying to rubbish wildlife habitat previously there by labeling it “contaminated brownfield land” is a travesty of the reality.

  7. BioRegional says:

    Hi feaspetrol, …
Hi feaspetrol, there was a study done on biodiversity at BedZED. The site was contaminated brownfield land mainly occupied by ponies. Brownfield sites are often great habitats, but ultimately it’s impossible to only build on sites without any biodiversity value at all. The green roofs at least provide a place for birds to rest and feed – a migration corridor, if you will – and we do now do more to address biodiversity impacts. You can’t always go as far as you’d like when doing mainstream work!

    People may assume …
People may assume that this development is eco friendly but, as a long time birdwatcher at Beddington, I can say that it was built on wildlife habitat where many birds nested and other animals lived. Cutting carbon emissions is a side issue to the real problem which is world overpopulation and unabating population growth. If carbon emissions were cut by 50% (don’t hold your breath), what good is that when the world population doubles again ? Focus on the real threat to wildlife and environment.
